A vision of things from the sea
“Don't wake me for the end of the world unless it has very good special effects.”

WP4 – Post is about the contributing to the post-production and visual effects (VFX) sectors through the Visual Effects Research Lab and Visual Effects Research Network
Goals
Based at the University of Dundee in Scotland, the Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL) brings together film, art, technology and computer science in post-production using technologically advanced cinematic tools. By doing so, and through initiating the Visual Effects Research Network it aimed to demonstrate the potential of combining expertise for delivery of screen content and information that can be used for entertainment media and in many other fields such as architecture, medicine and science.
Achievements
Established Visual Effects Research Laboratory (VERL) to foster research in knowledge and advanced techniques of post-production, computer generated visual effects and animation. Based at the University of Dundee in Scotland, VERL brings together film, art, technology and computer science in post-production using technologically advanced cinematic tools. By doing so, it has demonstrated the potential of combining expertise for delivery of screen content and information that can be used for entertainment media and in many other fields such as architecture, medicine and science.
The Post team have had successes including the completion of the Digital Innovation Shorts series which saw teams from Denmark, England, Germany and Scotland collaborate to produce and distribute short films.
The findings of the VERL were reported at major industry events, conferences and forums worldwide. Most events were fully trans-national with participation from across the NSR and the wider EU. For example, the WP leader represented the NSSP VERL at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Achievements are:
- Creating the Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL), an advanced research centre for media post-production techniques, allowing companies to access the latest VFX techniques
- Initiating the transnational Visual Effects Research Network of further and higher education institutions and SMEs in the NSR and demonstrating a model for remote, virtual, trans-national collaboration on post-production and visual effects so that SMEs can cooperate to offer increased scale and capacity and bid for higher value projects.
